Research

Research indicates that pictures and images transcend language barriers, helping students to engage in the writing process.  Richard and Beaudry Sinatra, Jeff & Stahl-Gemake, Josephine & Guastello’s article, Combining Visual Literacy, Text Understanding, and Writing for Culturally Diverse Students,” details how to use photo essays to help students develop written essays.  In fact, I linked their article below, because it is an interesting read, which provides anecdotes and descriptions of how to use photo essays in your classroom: Combining Visual Literacy, Text Understanding, and Writing for Culturally Diverse Students.
