A Vision For the Future: Literacy Learning Resources for November and December

During November and December continue to work on fluency and expression, but now focus on vocabulary and word play as well

Voice Dream Reader is an app that will read aloud text in PDF and photo formats.  It is best used on a tablet or iPad, and allows struggling readers to access the same worksheets as their classmates. Below is a video that outlines how to use the app.

Research

In the article Learning about word parts with Kidspiration S.R. Gill argues that teaching children word morphology, the meaning of the smaller parts of words, increases student’s word reading and comprehension.  As such, practices that replace lists of word definitions with strategies that focus on pulling words into parts and examining meaning will enhance students’ vocabulary learning.

Adaptations and Assistive Technology

Glogster is a digital bulletin board, and although it is not free, a teacher can sign up for a single account with 10 sub accounts for students.  While not necessarily accessible for the entire class, it is a good option for struggling readers.

Conversely, all students could create noun and verb pages using Google Slides.  This Google Suites feature also allows students to import images and essentially collage items and ideas.  It also includes all the Google Read&Write features for students who require talk to text.

Research
Once again, according to Lee Mountain in ROOTing out Meaning: More Morphemic Analysis for Primary Pupils, breaking words into smaller parts helps “students to recognize affixes and roots, learn their meanings, and apply this knowledge to unlock new words (p. 743).”

Adaptations and Assistive Technology

Mindmeister is an online program that allows students and teachers to create interactive mind maps.  Unfortunately, this feature is only partially free.  A basic account only allows you to create three webs.  As such, its use in a classroom setting is likely limited unless your administrator invests in monthly subscriptions.

Tech free adaptation: provide a graphic organizer and provide the words in advance.

Research

In the article Mind maps as primers when reading-for-learning in elementary grades? An eye tracking study Catryss Merchie and L. Van Keer share research that “spatially summarizing text content helps students in identifying text relationships and further organizing their knowledge, which promotes deep text processing and learning (Nesbit and Adesope 2006; Slotte and Lonka 1999).”  Although a relatively simple and commonly used strategy for reading comprehension, word webs and mind maps are supported by a large body of evidence.
